In rural counties across the country, the county fair season has started. Those of us living in rural communities communities look forward to Fair. It's a time for friends, a time for a little friendly competition - everything from tractor pulls to the the best chocolate cake! My favorite part of the fair is the FFA (Future Farmers of America) and the 4H competitions. For about 14 years we went to the International Fancy Food Show. Most of those were as the founder of Cooks & Connoisseurs but a couple were as a Food Broker representing about 30 companies. Those were indeed the days. Image the entire Jacob Javits Center in NYC filled to overflowing with gourmet food vendors from all over the world vying for you to sample their products. Fire on the Mountain - St Mary's Wilderness Fire

On Tuesday evening I noticed smoke on the mountains to the north of us - forest fire! As the week progressed the fire rapidly spread from one ridge to the next rapidly growing from a few hundred acres to over 4500 acres of the St Mary's Wilderness. Rt 56 from Vesuvius to the Blue Ridge Parkway was closed as was the a section of the Blue Ridge Parkway. The night sky glowed with red outlines of the mountain ridges - a very unsettling view. We live next door to a church. Great neighbors - only home 3 times a week: Sunday morning, Sunday evening & Wednesday night with the occasionally a Saturday wedding or evening softball game. You get the picture. Recently a new pastor took resisdence in the parsonnage, we've not met him. How I rang out the old year....

My last post was about why I rang OUT the old year - this one is how I rang it out ... well and a bit more about why... My good friend G.had a bad year too - her competetion horse suffered an injury a few weeks before I got hurt. The cut was the result of a careless worker leaving a bow saw out after cleaning up from an ice storm.
